Experts Warn Canadians Might See Higher Gas and Electricity Bills This Winter

We have been hearing a lot about the millions of people around Europe who might be struggling with an energy crisis this winter that many are worried about.

The price of energy and gas is expected to rise for millions and Canadians might not escape the crisis either it seems.

According to a recent report on the subject it has been suggested that Canadians could see a noticeable increase in their natural gas and electricity bills this winter.

Is the cost of living getting worse in Canada?

A report from earlier this year warned that more Canadians were taking on debt because of the rising cost of living. Another report from this summer had suggested that about half of Canadians were in a worse financial position than they found themselves last year.

Food banks have been struggling in Canada to keep up with demand that they have been seeing.

Some GTA food banks had suggested that they were seeing the highest demand in their history right now with so many who have been turning to them in need.

Inflation and the high cost of living might also be making it more difficult nowadays for community members to donate as well.

With the rising cost of living in food and rent we have even heard that there are students who have been sleeping in homeless shelters. This isn’t the standard of living that some might expect to find in Canada, we also know that inflation is an issue not specific to this country alone.

Vancouver and Toronto are among some of the most expensive cities to live in Vancouver and the high cost of living with food costs going up, potentially natural gas and electricity as well, those budgets are further squeezed.

Voting for change

The affordability crisis in Canada is one that a number of politicians have touched on throughout their campaigns. This is one issue that is close to home for many Canadians, a top voting issue when they head to the polls.

As the cost of living climbs in Canada it will further solidify the top issues for Canadians which includes healthcare and affordability as being the most important of the day.

Vancouver Island District Brings Up Idea of Capping Rent Increase Between Tenancies

There is a big issue with rent affordability around BC in areas like Vancouver, Victoria, and other cities. The issue extends around the country with millions who are concerned about the rising cost of living in the nation.

Recently, one district on Vancouver Island, North Cowichan, had floated the idea of capping rent increases between tenancies as a potential solution to help with rent affordability.

Landlords can increase the rent after a tenant moves out and this can rapidly drive up the cost of rent in the market in the area. The more that tenants would be moving out the more opportunity there would be to raise those rents. This is why the idea of a cap has come about.

There are already restrictions surrounding rent increases, but not when it comes to tenant changes. Will this be a new idea the province takes up?

Rents can increase dramatically between tenancies and that is the worry.

Right now the cost of living and housing affordability is on the minds of many in Canada.

Rent in Vancouver and the surrounding areas isn’t cheap. Thanks to that rising cost of living we’ve seen that Vancouver has frequently been named among the most expensive places to live in North America if not the world.

Even full-time working individuals and families are having a hard time and struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living.

A major voting issue for Canadians today – housing affordability and the cost of living

The cost of living is on the minds of many and for a number of voters, this is the most important issue of the day, there is a crisis that many are suffering and they want to know things will get better.

For many Canadians they say that their incomes aren’t keeping up with inflation and they are feeling the pain in numerous ways.

Changing habits in these times have meant some are reducing savings contributions, or they might be buying less, community resources such as food banks are also feeling the change too.

Unfortunately, though affordability and the economy might be a top issue of concern with many Canadians a solution might not be coming around the bend anytime soon.

Who can solve the issue of housing affordability in Canada?

According to one Ipsos poll on the issue about 3 in 10 Canadians reported that they don’t believe any single political party would be best suited to solve the problem for the cost of living.

As for the average rent in a city like Vancouver it continues to squeeze wallets, with sites like Zumper showing it at roughly 19%+ since last year.

How Good Is The Whistle Dog?

The Whistle Dog is here from A&W at participating Canada locations for a limited time while supplies last. You might ask what on earth is a Whistle Dog? It is the new hot dog on the menu at one of the largest fast food chains in the country.

Advertisements

What comes on the Whistle Dog from A&W?

As you can see from the pic it comes with cheese, relish, bacon, and a pork wiener.

What sort of hot dog is the Whistle Dog?

At first I was expecting the hot dog to be a plant based option and I was surprised when I saw that it wasn’t, it is a regular pork wiener that is raised without antibiotics. The pork hot dog for the Whistle Dog at A&W is split down the middle and then filled with the ingredients.

The new Whistle Dog also comes on a freshly toasted hot dog bun.

You can make your own customizations, remove cheese, or add more bacon etc. Decided to test this one out as it comes and not make any substitutions. It tasted great, 10/10 and would definitely order this one again.

Review: 10/10

It is not common to find hot dogs on the menus at Canadian fast food locations and it is refreshing to see another change coming from A&W. They are one of the best Canadian fast food restaurant chains in the country and this is because of their branding, food options, quality of food, direction they have taken with compost packaging etc.

Does Canada Need More Affordable Housing Options?

Affordability is a big issue in Canada these days, but even before inflation became one of the most talked about problems of the day there were already widespread concerns about housing and living affordability in the country.

The cost of living isn’t cheap in Vancouver and inflation has only made things worse, pushing many families to the edge of their finances. With this struggle has come a lot of stress and anxiety for a number of Canadians who worry if they too might face homelessness or fall into poverty, tackle food insecurity, and so on. The problems surrounding affordability impact millions.

There is a desperate need for more affordable housing options in Vancouver and around the country. It has been estimated by the CMHC that the country might need some 5.8 million new homes by 2030 if they want to seriously try and tackle the housing affordability problem.

But not everyone agrees that this is a problem with a lack of supply. There are reports on the topic that point in a different direction, suggesting that in some instances in Canada housing supply might be keeping pace with population or even growing faster than it.

How can a lack of supply be the reason for the prices Canadians are seeing then? But we are still repeatedly hearing that it is a lack of supply.

Either way, Canadians are struggling with the cost of living and affordability in Canada. One survey from the Angus Reid Institute suggested that as many as half of Canadians can’t keep up with the heavy cost of living.

This struggle for many is also placing more need on community resources in Vancouver and elsewhere that are there to try and bridge the gap and help those individuals and families get by. The pandemic was already a struggle for them and now inflation hasn’t made things any easier as some find themselves lining up for the first time to ask for help.

Community Resources For Canadians

  • community fridges have popped up in some Canadian cities and they allow anyone to anonymously come by and access whatever goods they might need that are in the community fridge storage
  • pay what you can food market in Vancouver is a great way to help families who are struggling with food insecurity, you come by and take what you need and leave whatever you can.
  • food banks are located all around BC and throughout Canada, including those like Greater Vancouver Food Bank, SHARE Food Bank, and Surrey Food Bank Society.

With many Canadians struggling to meet their daily needs it has sparked more interest for money-saving tips and tricks that might help Canadians to get their dollars to stretch a little further for them. Now there are a number of coupon and saving niche social media pages that help Canadians find deals and get more for less whenever they can.

It isn’t a struggle that is unique to Canada either, countries all around the world are struggling with inflation and Canada isn’t suffering the worst inflation crisis among them, but for those here it is higher than it has been in decades.

The question that keeps getting asked is when will things start to get better? At least with gas prices declining a little recently around the Lower Mainland this has helped to ease some of that pressure, because those prices too had been climbing to all-time highs this year.

Survey: Around 31% Of Canadians Not Earning Enough to Pay Their Bills

According to a recent survey by Ipsos it looks like roughly 31% of Canadians or more aren’t earning enough money to pay their bills.

Inflation is a big issue that is on the minds of many and for Canadians that already means looking where to save money and being more concerned about their financial future. Inflation and the cost of living is a top concern for millions of Canadians these days.

Canadians around the country are struggling to afford what they need and to keep a roof over their head and that is further reflected in this recent poll by Ipsos.

The survey showed that roughly 31% of Canadians don’t have enough to pay their bills and their debt, they don’t have a lot of room to absorb an increase in the cost of living.

This means that for some it could be just a few hundred dollars or more that would make them unable to meet their financial obligations and that means that inflation is more of a worry than ever. Gas prices have been rising, food prices, rent prices, and this is causing more Canadians to wonder when things might get better.

60% of Canadians worried about inflation

Other previous surveys on this topic have suggested that as many as 6 in 10 Canadians might be worried about inflation, the cost of living, and the general ability to feed their families.

If things get more expensive for gas, food, rent, and more, then it could mean more Canadian families are facing food insecure households and struggling with poverty and a decreased standard of living.
