Survey Finds Many Canadians Today Lack Outdoor Skills

A recent Scouts Canada Survey suggests that many Canadians today are lacking outdoor skills. When it comes to encountering bears in the woods, knowing about wild plants and which ones might be safe, or knowing how to camp, there are many lacking skills in this area.

For Canadians who do enjoy the outdoors there is no lack of opportunity around the country.

In BC there are multiple national parks and camping spaces to discover. If you are going for a weekend or several weeks you will find a rich variety of options for camping spaces and outdoor activities around the province.

Finding something to do outdoors in British Columbia is easy and this province has some of the best lakes, national parks, and top ski resorts, in the country. BC attracts visitors from around the world and across the country and the outdoor adventure opportunities that you find here are a big part of the attraction.

For Canadians who aren’t too great at camping skills it’s okay for most because they will likely never end up in a situation where they need them. Though some might tell you it’s better to have the skills and not need them then to need them and not have them.

Spending time outdoors isn’t high on the to-do list for most these days. Canadians on average aren’t spending a lot of time in outdoor spaces. This seems to be the case regardless of many Canadians reporting that they truly enjoy spending time outdoors.

Looking at Spending More Time Outdoors

One survey from Mazda Canada from 2021 found that many Canadians were planning on spending at least 18 hours per week outdoors last summer.

For those who aren’t getting out enough common reasons are that there is not enough time and also a lack of motivation as well for some.

For Canadians who are getting out and enjoying outdoor activities they report feeling that it helps them in a number of ways including with boosting their own productivity.

What are the most popular outdoor activities for Canadians?

While camping and spending time outdoors working on those outdoor skills isn’t the most favorable pastime for many Canadians there are still many who love camping and outdoor activities.

This year is expected to be another busy camping season for BC and if it is anything like last year then there are going to be hundreds of thousands of camping reservations made around the province.

What are outdoor adventure skills?

As a part of the outdoor adventures skills program where are a variety of skills that might be recognized. This could include sailing skills, winter skills, trail skills, camping skills, and more.

Canadians have been spending at least 4 hours per day on average using different apps on their phone and for some individuals trying to get more outdoor time it might mean spending less on the phone to get it. Finding the motivation however is going to be another obstacle that many have to overcome.

Past research has suggested that there are a variety of benefits to spending time outdoors. Scientists looking into the connections with spending time outdoors have asserted that spending that time in nature might have different positive effects on out brains and be able to possibly promote more physical activity and wellbeing.

How much does camping in Canada cost?

Camping costs vary depending on where campers are going to stay, how they will camp, what they might eat while camping, activities done during that trip etc.

On average, a camping trip is estimated to cost several hundred dollars for those looking to go camping in Canada.

However, there are ways to get creative with camping and not every camping trip looks the same in terms of where it is and how much it is going to cost.

There are hundreds of campsites to find and BC is one of the most popular places in the country for camping. In 2021 it is estimated that some 3 million or more campers visited BC Parks.

But the reservation system for camping isn’t always easy to book or access and some might argue that there isn’t enough supply for camping sites to meet the real camping demand that is really there.

When the bookings are open once again for those that want a reservation in one of the popular camping spaces around the province, we can expect that again we will see a rush once more with demand, as we have seen in the past.

B.C. Campfires To Be Banned This Week

The campfire ban in bc is coming into effect soon. As the province continues to see record smashing high temperatures it means that we are going to be seeing a ban coming on campfires around the region. Despite being one of the most popular times of the years for families and friends to go camping, those changes for banning campfires around bc go into effect this week.

What does the campfire ban mean?

Campfires in B.C. are going to be prohibited around the province B.C.starting on Wednesday at noon. There is already a ban on Category 2 and Category 3 open fires in place.

Is there a fire ban in b.c. 2021?

Yes there are restrictions on campfires right now around the province in B.C.

How long will the campfire ban in bc last?

The BC campfire restrictions are expected to stay in place until Oct. 15 or until the campfire restrictions order is officially rescinded.

Violating a fire ban can potentially result in a fine of $1,150, the costs associated with firefighting costs, or worse.

Why is there a campfire ban in bc?

Due to record breaking high temperatures and lower than normal precipitation, conditions they are currently seeing are expected to last several weeks. This is why they have moved forward with the camping ban.

The changes for campfires in bc taking place this week come after B.C. recently saw record high temperatures over the weekend that left many struggling to try and cool down around the province.

BC Parks are expecting this year to be a record breaking year for camping around the province but now those campfires will be restricted with these changes.

Ready For Step 3 in B.C. Reopening

On top of that high demand that is expected we are just about to move into step 3 of the 4 step B.C. reopening roadmap.

That next step in the B.C. reopening roadmap means that more pandemic related restrictions are going to be eased, more activities allowed, and pretty soon social distancing and masks might truly become a thing of the past.

With the next step coming for the B.C. reopening it means that we will see a return to normal indoor and outdoor gatherings, increased capacity for gatherings, and other changes.

RV Vacations Making A Comeback In A Big Way

In 2020 we saw that many people sought to rent campers and RVs because they wanted to still get out and have a vacation but stay distanced and do their own thing.

“Covid Campers” became all the rage as retailers offering motor home rentals and trailer rentals quickly ran out as the demand climbed.

RV sales smashed records last year and sellers in a variety of places quickly ran out of supply. Those in the business could not have anticipated what they were going to witness unfold for this market. Some didn’t think that the travel demand was going to be as strong as it was.

Those trailers and campers offered people a chance to get away but still stay distanced and that’s why they saw a surge in popularity.

Around the U.S. and Canada we saw that there was an incredible demand for RV sales and rentals, for trailers and campers too.

Dealers in this space saw a large portion of first time buyers coming in, the same for the boat market too.

They were looking for everything, from hard-walled pop-up trailers to the 40 foot destination trailers and other options in-between. It was a diverse crowd too, both young and old customers coming in and looking to get out and get onto the road.

There are a decent portion of folks who have never experienced a camper or RV vacation and those that do often report saying that they would be open to doing it again because they enjoyed it so much.

When traveling with a group or family, pets, it can be a cost-effective, safe, and fun travel solution. In recent years there have also been options coming up for peer-to-peer rentals too.

Where Can You Rent An RV?

There are many places around Canada, the U.S. and elsewhere if you are looking to rent an RV or a trailer for a vacation. Some of those companies that have come into the market are one like the Canadian Wheel Estate, Outdoorsy in the U.S., and now Camping World has also recently announced they are looking to do the same.

Camping World recently announced a peer-to-peer RV rental marketplace and this is a great chance for many others to get into the market.

Not everyone can buy their own camper, trailer, or RV etc, and there are several reasons why.

From costs of purchasing upfront, to the upkeep costs, to where they are going to store the camper, there are many considerations involved. The new RV rental trend though is giving those who do already own an extra chance to earn some money from their trailer or RV.

Peer To Peer RV Rentals

For many individuals or families who own an RV or camper they are not going to use it that often throughout the year. They might get a few weeks in, but most of the time through the year it will be parked and no one will be using it.

Now there are other options though, they could place that camper up on a site and rent it out when they want. This is a great way to make an extra stream of income from it and thousands of owners have taken up the opportunity to do it.

We do peer to peer rentals for cars, boats, pools, so why not RVs and campers too? It’s working and the market is growing.

There is a serious RV rental boom that has been going on since last year and we might see the same this year for summer too.

Renting an RV doesn’t have to be as costly as you might think. Especially with peer to peer rental options.

For the RV rental market you find that there are a wide variety of sizes and price options and this can be a great getaway choice when traveling with a group or looking for a family vacation somewhere.

In some circumstances this can also be the more cost-effective option when you are looking to travel. If you are going with several people together and can split the cost then it can be cheaper depending on where you are going etc. It is a fun new way to seek out adventure and make some new memories with family and friends.

When you want to have your own little hotel on wheels then why not rent your own RV for a special vacation. There are a variety of price options so it might not be as expensive to do it as you would think it would be.

B.C. is expecting to see a booming camping year this year again and that means many RV parks are going to be filling up quickly. If we see more pandemic restrictions lifted then that is only going to accelerate that trend.

B.C. is one of the most beautiful provinces to explore and plan a trip with a trailer, camper, RV, or just camping with a tent and going on your own road trip. There are a large number of areas to search for camping spaces if you want to rent a spot for your RV or trailer this summer.

If you don’t have an RV or trailer and want to rent one there are also several options for that as well, along with peer-to-peer solutions.

BC Parks Expected To Grow After $83 Million Budget Increase

BC parks are getting an upgrade and a multi-million boost to the tune of $83 million coming to the BC Parks budget that is going to help fuel the creation of new campsites and expand trails.

Dozens of new campsites are being added to the growing list of available campsites in BC for 2021 and beyond. They are expecting to have a record breaking year this year for BC parks despite the 3rd wave and rising cases in the province. Campground sites around the BC region are trying to do their own part to keep people safe, this includes some limiting the number of people at the campsite to a household bubble of 6 or less.

Travel restrictions for BC also have not been ruled out yet. For now they are ramping up vaccine campaigns around the country and the hope is that with more people quickly becoming vaccinated that we will quickly get through this 3rd wave and see a new normal in BC.

In the past there have been issues with a high demand for camping in BC and a limited number of campsites. Reservations can fill up quickly and there is a need for more campsites and trails in the region. This is going to give people even more opportunities to get out and explore their beautiful BC communities.

In the spring and summer you can find many great activities in Vancouver and BC to enjoy. Renting kayaks or canoes, finding boat trips, taking a helicopter ride around the mountains, skiing up at Whistler, fishing at the lake, renting water sports equipment to have a fun day at the beach with family, or relaxing and taking a tube down a winding river. You can find a long list of things to see and do around town in the summer that will keep you plenty busy.

Looking to rent a boat for an hour or two?

Want to float for a few hours down a river in a tube or rubber boat? Looking to get away in an RV or set up camp for a few days with family? There are many ways to make this summer fun and have days that you will never forget. Despite COVID-19 cases still rising there are many festivals, events, and services still operating, that are trying to navigate this pandemic in a safe manner and still help people get out and enjoy their lives safely.

That new normal might not be that far off, and for many even today it might feel a little back to normal when you can go out and get lost in the woods somewhere, and get some of that sunshine and fresh air.

BC Parks are already taking reservations for 2021.

If you are looking to book something for this summer then you can already access the website and search through the booking tool to see what is available, they let you book several weeks ahead of time. It is expected to fill up quickly as this is anticipated to be a record-breaking year for camping and BC parks this year. After everyone was stuck indoors last year because of the pandemic, and after the shift of working from home and spending more time at home, many are eager to get outdoors in BC.

Just this year alone it is anticipated that some 185 new campsites are going to be added around BC and that means that those traveling here and those living here are going to have many more camping options coming soon.

It’s not just about adding new campsites though it is also about getting funds that can help go toward restoring damaged ecosystems in the province too and helping to create safer wildlife habitat overall in BC park areas.

The budget for parks is increasing by more than 50 per cent for the capital budget, this means it will increase on average about 22 per cent every year over the 3 years that the $83 million gets added. This comes after they saw record breaking numbers last year and it is expected to continue, they need more resources to keep up with that growing demand.

Right now you might be able to book some campsites in BC but they are still not operating things with business as usual, as you might expect prior to the pandemic. From limited capacity to new COVID-19 related restrictions in place, the camping experience might be a bit different this go around.

For campsite locations in BC it is expected that BC residents are going to be given priority access and non-BC residents would have access to remaining arrival dates that aren’t booked up for the season.

After you book your reservation to go camping this summer it might get impacted by changing public health orders as well, new travel restrictions might be introduced in BC for example. That could impact the plans and so it might be best not to book too far ahead considering the ease with which things could change because of COVID-19 cases.

When can you book BC provincial campgrounds 2021? The answer is that you can already book them today. Certain BC parks are going to be open on different days for public access, you can find more on that here. You can also find out information about making campsite reservations in BC here.

Planning a Camping Trip in BC 2021

Right now in BC because of the 3rd wave and those rising cases it is still advised that people stay in their own local communities and don’t travel too far if it isn’t for non-essential purposes.

Staying local and planning ahead can be the best approach this season when it comes to exploring outdoors in BC and making any camping plans with the family. This can be as simple as planning ahead with everything that you need for camping in BC so that you do not need to visit any local stores or gas stations for example, while you are on your travels to the camping destination.

Many parks and camping spots might be opening again but they don’t want to see a rush of out of town visitors bring that risk in to the community that might quickly be overwhelmed with a rise in COVID-19 cases like we’ve recently seen in Whistler.

The recent budget increase is great news for BC Parks and the BC community; this will bring value to environmental spaces around BC and strengthen habitats, while also improving the overall BC camping experience. Many people in this province, as well as our beautiful BC parks and trails themselves, are going to directly benefit from this investment now and in the future for years to come.

Finding Great B.C. Summer Camps

B.C. has a lot of great summer camps for kids, some are a little more expensive than others. You can find a great variety for whatever you might be looking for, which could be biking, swimming, riding, sports, or something else for the kids to focus on.

Popular B.C. summer camps include names like Timberline Ranch, Outward Bound Canada, Pedalheads Bike, Swim, and Sport, Block 8 Academy, Camp Qwanoes, and others. Some of these are going to be overnight camp options, family camps, just for kids, or day camps etc, there is much to choose from. Though COVID-19 has changed some of the procedures in every industry today, and might have drastically changed camping plans last year, this year could look a lot different.

There are already many camp activities planned for this summer and those which are also supposed to take place this spring like the Pedalheads Bike, Swim, and Sport camp, YMCA Camp Elphinstone, InterVarsity Pioneer Camp Pacific, and others.

Find B.C. Camp Reviews for Summer Camps

You can find many different reviews, photos, videos, and other content online, from people who have shared their own camp experiences. Look through social media and get a feel for that camp by browsing their pages and seeing what sort of activities they offer. This can help you to narrow in on what camp you might like to choose to go with.

Price could be another factor, or simply location. Time could be something else that plays a role as well seeing as there are a variety of different day camps, overnight camps, and other styles. You might want your children to only focus on sports, or camping and wilderness activities, there is a little something for everyone. There are even Bible camps to be found just as well.

You can find all girl camps or all boy camps, family camps, and a variety of options so that you can carve out a summer that works best for your family and its own schedule. The wide variety of programs makes camping in B.C. very flexible. There are all sorts of specialized camps in B.C., traditional camps, religious camps, and something for everyone here.

Making Reservations for a Camp Site In B.C.

The tool that enables you to make reservations at camp locations around B.C. is already open and you are allowed to book at least 2 months ahead of time. It’s expected to be a record breaking camping year in B.C. and so you might want to book soon if you are looking to make that vacation close to home.

However, things might change and those activities could be restricted if the 3rd wave gets worse and more cases rise.

Right now changes have already been made for religious gatherings and some dining services indoors etc, who knows what more might come soon with things changing each day.

What we know right now is that variants are rising and they are accounting for more cases in B.C., those in the region are restricted from non-essential travel.

People are still able to get outdoors though and go for a walk or stay within their own close circles, those in their homes who they live with. Restaurants have to close up for indoor dining again and some physical activity classes are also being cancelled.

Polls have surveyed how people feel about another lockdown and it seems rather split in how those in Canada might feel on that. One recent poll suggested that about 56+ percent agree that there should not be another lockdown, but close to that, 43+ percent disagreed and would support a lockdown. B.C. is in the 3rd wave right now when it had been on its way to a reopening and things were sounding very positive for the summer.

There are some big events expected to take place this summer, like the Richmond Night Market 2021, and a busy camping season on top of that, but who knows what might be changed within the next few weeks.

Ontario has just recently gone into their own multi-week lockdown, and Whistler has closed as well for several weeks. This comes after restaurants had just been starting to get busy again as people went out to enjoy the warmer spring weather, patios around Vancouver and other areas were filling up.

B.C. Camp Review

I went to several YMCA camps when I was younger and YMCA Camp Elphinstone was one of my most memorable experiences. But not everyone wants to travel far or is going to be able to travel far for camp activities this summer.

As far as what camp I remember best though or would recommend, it might be Camp Elphinstone because I found that this B.C. camp was fun, safe, educational, and one of the best camp memories that I have.

Will there be camping in 2021?

Right now people in B.C. are encouraged to stay close to home and stay in their own communities. This is to help prevent the spread of the disease and decrease cases that are ending up in the hospital.

Some hospitals have indicated that they are nearing capacity and there is concern enough that overflow stations might start being set up with extra beds to try and help the situation. Things might change within a month or two though if the situation gets better with hospitals getting more of a hold on the rising rates of variants and cases in the region that keep coming in.

For now though it’s time to bunker down, stay safe and distanced, avoid non-essential travel, and try to be patient while we navigate the 3rd wave in B.C.

We can expect that in the summer we might see more of an easing of COVID-19 restrictions. This might mean that finally more people feel comfortable with getting out and doing some travel.

Of course, camping and going with an RV for example is still a great way to stay distanced. For that reason we saw that RV sales and other campers last year exploded as more people looked for social distancing suitable travel options.

There are millions of households in North America that love camping and B.C. has many great camping spots to consider. There has been so much support for the camping industry in B.C. that surveys have found that there is significant support from the public for B.C. parks getting more funding.

People love getting outdoors and going hiking or camping and they want to know that B.C. is funding these activities, putting enough resources into keeping up those parks and services.

Those surveys have also found that people are more likely to go out and enjoy the parks in B.C. now since COVID-19 struck. They want something different after being stuck at home during the lockdown for months.

From having a picnic by the ocean to playing volleyball on the beach with close friends, this summer is expected to look much different than last summer did for many.

Now that outdoor gathering restrictions have changed, and more expected to come soon to the religious services and other services, we might see a more normal summer in 2021 now than we saw last year. It cannot come soon enough for many, especially those who have businesses that are still struggling.

How do you make reservations for camping in BC?

They’ve made it easy with a variety of resources to help you find the right camping spot and book it well in advance. Advanced reservations are already being opened up for camping locations not only in the B.C. region but in other areas of North America too. Camping season is coming soon and campers are already rushing to book their B.C. campsite before they get filled up.

Expecting a Busy B.C. Camping Season for 2021

BC Parks Discover Camping is open now for the reservation service. They are expecting that this is going to be a very busy camping season ahead. Camping can provide for a safe outdoor activity for those who want to stay distanced and just stay with their own circles. There is also the option to rent an RV as well and stay distanced while on the road or camping in that fashion.

Have A Backup Ready For Your Camping Plans

It is recommended that those who are interested in going camping in BC this year have a backup option ready. There is a lot of demand for the campgrounds in BC and they might fill up quickly. If you do not get the place that you want then it might pay to have several campground options ready in the B.C. region that you are open to.

BC Locals Booking First for 2021 Camping Season

British Columbians are supposed to be given priority for this upcoming 2021 camping season but that’s reportedly going to depend on an honor system. They will need to attest and confirm that they’re a resident of BC from the landing page, before going on to make their camping reservations.

Based on that system, who knows if that is going to work 100 percent efficiently. This is because you don’t need to provide verification to prove residency. By clicking the button on the landing page to indicate you are from BC it isn’t clear how many might be coming from out-of-province to do their camping.

We might see many Canadians coming from outside of BC to camp, even though it’s still discouraged to travel between provinces or outside of your own region. Because of COVID-19 they want to keep those camping sites reserved for BC residents first if they can but that could change before summer arrives.

COVID-19 Camping Changes in BC

There are likely to be a variety of new restrictions at these campgrounds, such as limited reservations or distancing measure because of COVID-19. Considering this then it might be valuable to look up their social media accounts, websites, and see what if any updates they’ve made about the upcoming camping season.

If you are thinking about going camping this summer then you should already be planning and looking at parks. Take a look at the website and get an idea of what park you might want to go to, what campground you might want to make a reservation at.

Be prepared to have more than one option in case that first option fills up. It could easily happen. You don’t want to be left with nothing and there are many great campgrounds to choose from. There has been issues in the past with the websites used to book those campgrounds but if you remain patient and come back to it and give it a try, it should help you to set up your BC camping plans for this summer. Many have already been able to successfully use the campground reservation tool to book for the coming months ahead.
