Travel Disruptions Heading Into Summer

It is a busy summer for travellers in Canada and around the world. Many people made their way to new destinations over the long holiday weekend recently and there was a huge disruption as far as cancelled flights and rescheduled flights for many.

According to Flight Aware, a travel tracker, it is estimated that Air Canada ranked number one out of all others in the world for flight delays this recent long weekend.

The disruption has brought the attention of politicians around the country as well, they want to know what the reasoning is for the hold up that we are seeing at different stations around the nation for people who are trying to get different required papers etc for their travel plans.

Some of those Canadians admit to standing in line for hours just to try and get their new passports that are needed for travel.

The frustrations have been felt not only in the country here but there have been issues with travel plans around the world as people look to get away for the summer.

Cancelled and delayed flights have caused a great headache for many. Some experts have even suggested that these Canadian travel delays might even last through until the end of summer, that they won’t be over anytime soon.

Majority of Canadians planning a summer vacation

There are many Canadians who are looking to get away for a summer vacation this year, even if things are difficult right now with inflation and an increased cost of living for millions. They might be staying closer to home because of gas prices but there is broad optimism to get out and enjoy summer by making some fun vacation plans, according to various surveys.

Last year we saw surveys indicating that many around Canada were looking forward to upcoming travel plans in the new year for 2022 and now we can see that the crowds are off with a bang for the long holiday weekend. Many suspected that the backlog might have some impact because of the pandemic, for passports etc, but maybe many didn’t expect that it would be this bad in terms of timing or difficulty.

Streamline The Travel Process

To try and deal with the lines and ease this issue there are some special passport sites that have already been set up in areas like Calgary and Edmonton, as well as in the greater Vancouver region too. They are working on fixing the problem and once again trying to streamline that process for travelers.

Some of those Canadians with immediate travel plans are also allegedly being given priority at some officers in order to get the documents that they need for travel.

Air Canada Cancels Over 9,000 Flights This Summer

In another recent move it looks like Air Canada is going to be cancelling over 9,500 flights this summer. Will this help to get a hold of the travel chaos? It is only a matter of time before things become more streamlined for passengers and operators and they are already working hard to make that happen.

Now there are customer rights advocates who are raising the question of compensation that might be linked to those cancelled flights too. The hope with many of course, on either side, is that the disruptions won’t last that much longer.

Canadians Eating Less Due To Rising Prices

Millions of families are having to cut back because of rising inflation and the increasing cost to the standard of living around Canada and elsewhere. Multiple surveys have shown that many Canadians are doing worse financially this year than they were last year.

Not only that but another report has shown that almost a quarter of Canadians might be eating less because of the rising prices of food and everything else.

According to that report on the current standard of living for Canadians it looks like about 1 in 5 Canadians reported going hungry at some point in time between March 2020 and March 2022. Canadians are struggling with the rising cost of food.

There are many Canadians who need help to battle this environment of food inflation and more and it is clear that inflation is a top concern to many Canadians these days.

Through the pandemic we had already seen food banks and other community resources see an increase in demand, some of them were struggling to keep up. Now there is even more pressure as families across the country struggle to afford basics like rent and food.

May Food Inflation 9.7%

Food inflation was up to 9.7% around April/May this year and food isn’t the only area where Canadians are seeing prices climb.

For one food bank in Toronto they said that they’ve seen a drastic increase in the number of visitors that they are getting, thousands of new families are turning for help.

To try and help Canadians politicians have offered small rebates in some circumstances like the gas rebate in BC, or announced a pause on gas tax in areas like Ontario. Still, there are many struggling and wondering when more is going to be done to help. How bad is the situation going to get before it gets better? That is a question that many are no doubt asking themselves right now.

Surveys show that overall Canadians are feeling pessimistic, worried about the future, and feeling a great deal of anxiousness over the economy and state of ongoing and unchecked inflation.

Coquihalla Opening Early After Historic BC Flooding

The recent historic flooding that took place in British Columbia had a great impact on communities around the province. There were many evacuations, homes destroyed, and some who lost their lives as well. We saw supply chain issues come about as a result, for a supply chain that was already struggling because of the pandemic, and gas restrictions went into effect.

Now those gas restrictions in BC have been lifted recently. And it looks like the highway is going to be open earlier than expected after crews have been working hard around the clock to get things back to normal for us.

BC Highway Reopening Dec 20

On Monday it is expected that the highway will reopen to some extent for commercial vehicles and buses. This reopening for the highway in BC comes well ahead of the expectation that we might not have seen it reopen until next year.

Emergency crews working on the task have been working hard and around the clock to make sure that communities in BC can soon reconnect and get back to business, reopening before the Christmas holiday.

The reopening on Dec 20th for the Coquihalla Highway is expected to be open for commercial vehicles and inter-city buses. For now we aren’t clear when it might reopen to full traffic.

Right now those in BC are being warned against traveling because of road conditions and concerns over COVID-19/Omicron.

There are still heavily damaged locations along the Coquihalla Highway that crews are busy working on. It’s also been reported that there will be some issues with power along the highway so there will be limited lighting available for travel in that area because of this, and you can expect to see reduced speeds for safety.

Priority To Get Trucks Moving Again on Coquihalla Highway

Officials have credited remarkable engineering feats with making this all possible in being able to get the Coquihalla Highway open again to reestablish that travel.

At first it wasn’t expected that they might reach this level of progress until early in the New Year but now British Columbians have a chance to again access those communities before the Christmas holiday now that things are reopening soon. The project of getting these areas reopened around the province after flooding has taken the work of hundreds of individuals using over 200 pieces of heavy machinery to get the job done.

The main priority after the flooding this year has been to get the supply chains operational again by working on those more than a dozen sites around the province where road lanes were completely wiped out. As for the exact time that this traffic might start flowing again on that day they are still determining that.

Holiday Shopping Started While Delays Persist for Port of Vancouver

There are ships around the Port of Vancouver that have been delayed from getting in. This isn’t the only area where ships are currently delayed from making their normal route. It is reported that there are supply chain issues expected this fall and shoppers have been urged to get an early start to things.

Already, there are some who have begun their Christmas shopping and they have looked to get an extra early start on things this year.

The Port of Vancouver delays could persist for some time. This delay with shipping containers might make things difficult for the upcoming holiday season with getting things here on time and having enough in stock to try and meet the demand.

Shipping Delays Mounting Leading Up To Holiday Season

The shipping delays are going on in Vancouver and other parts of the world and could mean that we might see more supply chain issues as the holiday season approaches.

For some stores around Canada, like toy stores for example, they could run out of some popular in demand items and that means that some parents are getting started now on looking for what they need.

Sales might be harder to find as well as those items that are in high demand. In some areas of the U.S. there are stores that have already recently implemented limits on purchases because they’re trying to avoid those shortages that we saw last year because of the pandemic.

Advertisements

For some items there might be a lot of demand but the capacity isn’t there and so this could lead to supply chain issues. Experts suggest that we might still experience some of those supply chain issues in the coming weeks ahead in different parts of the world.

With the backlog of ships in Vancouver right now it isn’t clear when this might be resolved fully and what impact this might have on the supply chain overall.

Those who don’t want to end up seeing empty shelves when they head out to do holiday shopping might have already started looking for what they need and more are also likely to get started soon once Halloween is over.

For some items it could be harder to find, such as trying to find certain toys for example, and that’s why experts are warning the public that they should look to get started earlier rather than later this year because of those potential supply chain issues that we might see.
