BC SPCA Set New Record For Animals Helped Last Year

Last year the BC SPCA set a new help record for animals in need around the province that they’ve offered assistance to.

In 2021 the BC SPCA helped more animals than they ever had before and on their site you can find photos of the different animals that they’ve rescued which are up for foster or adoption.

The BC SPCA last year alone was able to help thousands of animals around the province.

There are still many animals in need that they continue to provide resources for and there are many ways to support their efforts that might not look directly like giving out of your own pocket.

Spreading the word about this organization on social media can go a long way to spread awareness for the good that they are doing and for the animals who are still in need.

Multiple ways to give to animals in need

Whether it be giving donations, or sponsoring a kennel etc, there is more than one way to give to BC SPCA to help them help animals in the province.

With wildfires and floods contributing to a rise in that need for animal welfare assistance the BC SPCA was there to step up and be the solution that we so desperately need for those who are unable to help themselves.

The BC SPCA has been doing vital work for years around the province that helps to take care of cats, dogs, birds, pigs, and a wide range of other animals that need help.

Helping 118,917 domestic, wild, and farm animals in BC in 2021

The BC SPCA was able to help tens of thousands of animals in need, and this is tens of thousands of more animals than they had helped in the previous year.

BC Open Net Pen Farmed Salmon Placed on Avoid Buying List by Seafood Watch

Seafood Watch has placed BC open net pen farmed salmon on the avoid buying list, along with other seafood products coming from other areas of the country.

On their report they state that due to the impacts of sea lice and disease transmission that these items are on the avoid list.
The majority of farmed salmon products have now been rated by the Seafood Watch program as something to avoid because of the concern for chemicals, disease, and other issues.

However, some have seen their ratings improve for salmon farming operations in certain regions.

It might come as a shock to many in BC that just recently the farmed salmon in this area has been reduced to an avoid label because of those concerns for disease or chemicals for open net pen farmed salmon, as well as impacts potentially to wild salmon.

Earlier this year we also saw some BC restaurants take salmon off of their menu over concerns related to the declining population. It has been a concern for years now that farmed fish might threaten the wild salmon population.

The market in BC has dealt with some forced closures of salmon farms and authorities have been busy working on illegal fishing activity on the Fraser River in the province too.

There are a variety of concerns for this industry as well as a great deal of support for the wellness of the fish population in the region too.

Today salmon is still the most popular fish in the United States and Canadians love it too but previous research has suggested that many might be concerned about its cost and misinformed about production of the product as well.

From navigating farmed salmon to genetically modified salmon, or looking for other distinguishing factors in products, there are multiple reasons why other more sustainable seafood choices are being promoted around the world today.

Those sustainable food choices are being promoted not only as an alternative food source but also as a creative solution to try and restore the ocean as well.

Park Board Approves Fines for Feeding Wild Animals

They had to close down Stanley Park for some time recently to the public because of the rise in coyote attacks in the area. A variety of issues were pointed to that might have contributed to that problem. Why were coyotes attacking more people in Stanley Park? That is what many wanted to know. Experts gave a variety of reasons, from displacement to people feeding them, and more.

Recently, some individuals had been caught feeding coyotes in Stanley Park and it is a problem around the city that can get you into trouble.

Fines for Feeding Wild Animals

Feeding wildlife in Vancouver could cost you hundreds of dollars now if you are caught and fined. The Vancouver park board recently voted to approve of the measure that would bring about a $500 fine for anyone that gets caught feeding wild animals.

Anyone that gets caught feeding wild animals in Vancouver like coyotes, racoons, birds, and other animals in the park, could see that $500 fine as a result of their actions. Those who are trying to feed them might feel like it is an effort to help but animal experts warn that it does more harm than good.

Feeding wildlife around Vancouver is an issue that many are passionate about addressing, trying to raise awareness and education about the problem and discourage the public from attempting to feed wildlife when outdoors. Walking around Stanley Park and other areas of the city can still be enjoyable, experiencing the wildlife in those parks doesn’t have to include feeding them.

There Is No Safe Wildlife Animal Feeding Says Animal Group

According to animal advocates and groups who have spoken on the issue they claim that there is no safe wildlife animal feeding and strongly urge the public to avoid engaging in this behavior because there can be great consequences.

There are some areas that you can specifically go to in Vancouver if you are looking to feed animals and this means finding a place in the city where you can still see wildlife but be in a place where you are allowed to feed them.

Find places such as animal sanctuaries in the lower mainland or petting zoos, these are more appropriate areas to go to when looking to feed animals rather than feeding wild animals in areas like Stanley Park, because this is something that is prohibited and could get you fined and feeding those animals can cause more problems for them in the long run.

Stanley Park Closing Early Over Coyote Attacks

Stanley Park is going to be closing early, from 7PM to 7AM because of the ongoing coyote attacks that have been reported in the region. There have been several coyote attacks this year on people who had been visiting the park and now the park is going to be closed as a result in an effort to try and prevent attacks.

Advertisements

It’s alleged that part of the problem might stem from people feeding the animals in the park. This is a park that gets many visitors in Vancouver, both locals and tourists alike. It is one of the most popular parks in Vancouver and there are many who explore through Stanley Park for one reason or another.

The coyote attacks in Stanley Park have also reportedly started impacting businesses at Stanley Park too. Now the attacks have been closing down parts of Stanley Park and there is the new restriction from 7PM to 7AM coming in as well. Researchers have been examining what might be contributing to the problem.

Previously, runners had been encouraged to avoid Stanley Park because of the risk of coyote attacks in the region. Signs have also been placed up around the park notifying the public about the dangers as well, with tips on what to do if confronted.

Several coyotes have already been euthanized in Stanley Park over the attacks that have taken place.

What’s causing the coyote attacks in Stanley Park?

There are many encounters in the Metro Vancouver area where people have seen coyotes and not all of those instances are going to turn violent. But a number of them have in Stanley Park and that has prompted increasing warnings about the potential risk.

A number of factors have been suggested, among them are the tendency of coyotes to want to chase things that are running away from them which is why some joggers in Stanley Park might have been targeted. Other suggestions for what might be contributing to the coyote attacks in Stanley Park are that people have been hand-feeding the animals, they are being displaced from their habitat, or that drugs or toxins might be involved.

Because of the uptick in attacks this is why experts on the issue have admitted that those who are hand feeding coyotes are doing them more harm than good by contributing to that loss in natural boundaries.

More Protections For Critical Whale Habitat Around Canada and United States

Southern resident orcas are an endangered species and they just recently got some more needed protection when the National Marine Fisheries Service expanded rules that offer an expansion to the whales’ critical habitat.

Advertisements

The critical habitat expands from Canada to the U.S. has been expanded by about 16,000 square miles. With the increase this brings the overall protected critical habitat to over 18,000 square miles.

The Southern Resident Orcas had been designated as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act several years ago and they are one of the most critically endangered marine mammals in the United States as well.

The critical habitat for the Southern Resident Orcas is a certain region that contains essential features that are necessary to conserve the orcas and they can often be found swimming along the coasts around the North Pacific. The Southern Resident Orcas are the smallest of the resident populations of killer whales.

It isn’t uncommon for tourists, Canadians, and other travelers, to see orcas off the West Coast of British Columbia. They have been spotted plenty of times and you can even book whale watching boating tours in a variety of places around the province.

The new protections for the Southern resident orcas comes from the U.S. government and the move is going to be able to add thousands of square miles of protected habitat from the border down to California around Point Sur.

We might see the Southern Resident Orcas go extinct over the next few decades if more isn’t done to try and help to protect them and their habitat. Not only are they listed as an endangered species in the United States but the Southern Resident Orcas have also been listed as such by Canada too.

Several Attacks in Recent Days from Coyotes in Stanley Park

Several coyote attacks have taken place in Stanley Park over just the last few days and it has many wondering what can be done or when something might be done to try and make the situation better.

Advertisements

Signs can be seen that display warnings about coyotes that have been seen in the park. They’ve attacked seniors, children, and the signs suggest that if you do see a coyote in Stanley Park they you shouldn’t run but stop and face it, wave your arms and make noise.

Even some lawyers/animal activists have reportedly suggested that they are surprised no one has sued over the coyote incident with these attacks in Stanley Park.

Stanley Park is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations in Vancouver for tourists and locals to come. This expansive park region right by the ocean offers stunning views, plenty of opportunity for hiking and sightseeing, but for some it has meant being unexpectedly attacked by coyotes.

Just recently a story came out about a 5 year old boy attacked in Stanley Park by a coyote and as well a senior just became the latest victim of another coyote attack in Stanley Park as well.

While having fun with the family, walking, or having a picnic, the coyotes have been a risk for those who are passing through the area in Stanley Park; several victims in Vancouver have endured coyote attacks.

Exhibiting Abnormal Behavior?

Some animal experts suggest that coyotes in the region are displaying abnormal behavior. And there have been warnings to the public to stay out of Stanley Park because of the risk for attacks from coyotes and attacks that have happened. One coyote expert from Alberta has suggested that there might be several issues contributing to the problem here.

Food Conditioning
One of those problems might be coyotes being hand fed or food conditioned, noting that there is chronic feeding that goes on around Stanley Park. Displacement for coyotes from their normal areas is also happening.

Displacement
The coyotes are being pushed into fringe areas possibly and this could be contributing to the attacks taking place.
Drugs or Toxins etc

Drugs or Toxins etc
Some of the behavior from the coyotes could also suggest that the animals are intoxicated, they might have ingested drugs, toxins, or opioids.

For now the public are being urged to stay out of Stanley Park which is used to seeing plenty of traffic in the summer months being as this is one of the most popular tourist and local destinations in the city.

Vancouver Aquarium Reopening Next Week

The pandemic has hit many businesses hard and one of those industries that has paid a significant price is the tourism industry. Almost overnight things drastically changed because of COVID-19 and it would be more than one year before we might see things start to return to any sort of new normal.

Now, BC is reopening and moving forward with its roadmap for that plan, along with other areas around the world. Travel is picking up in Canada, the U.S., and other countries. Vaccine rates are climbing and in general it looks like the tourism industry is slowly starting to make that comeback again.

The border reopening with the U.S. and Canada for fully vaccinated Americans recently also helped to boost that tourism activity. Instantly we saw long lines at the border with many Americans who were eager to come across finally for non-essential travel.
